i followed the installation instructions and everything went fine. however, after the first reboot (booting off of my kernel), i get the following error:

Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or 03:03
Please append correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:03

a few lines up was this line:

Code:
Partition check:
 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: unknown partition table
 /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0: unknown partition table

here are the relevant parts of my fstab:

Code:
/dev/hda1   /boot   ext3   noauto,noatime       1 2
/dev/hda3   /       ext3   noatime              0 1
/dev/hda2   none    swap   sw                   0 0
/dev/hdb1   /big    ext3   noatime              0 3
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0   /mnt/cdrom   iso9660 noatuo,ro   0 0
proc        /proc   proc   defaults             0 0

tmpfs          /dev/shm   tmpfs  defaults       0 0

i'm guessing i did something wrong when configuring and compiling my kernel?

any help greatly appreciated

the relevant parts of my grub.conf file (just in case)

Code:
title=Gentoo Linux 1.4
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda3

To redo your kernel, see this. Once your back into your system, verify that you've included support for ext3 (not as a module).

ext3 support is definitely in there as a built-in option

here are all the things that i have selected under file-systems:

Kernel automounter version 4 support (also supports v3)
Ext3 journalling file system support
Virtual memory file system support (former shm fs)
ISO 9660 CDROM file system support
/proc file system support
/dev file system support
- Automagically mount at boot
Second extended fs support
UFS file system support

(i included UFS because i plan on attaching a UFS disk after I get the system up and running)

I'm not sure if this will help much but doesn't the line that says kernel at the beginning have to say this?

kernel=/boot/bzImage root/dev/hda3

I'm actually in my installer once again right now reinstalling with a problem. I get that same error but my choice was lilo not grub. My boot and root partitions are both ext3 and I have them as built-in support on my kernel. (gentoo kernel not vanilla). My fstab is setup just like his *points*, my lilo seams to be setup properly with the exception I'm booting without a initrd. I'm gonna compile mkinitrd, make a initrd file for my kernel, and hope it works. Once again...I'm pretty sure everything of mine is setup correctly but I'm not positive because otherwise this would all work. Well, I'm gonna reboot now and hopefully having the initrd file will make a difference, if so I'll post that it fixed it...otherwise, please give me some suggestions.

I'm not sure if this has any bearing on your problem or not, but you really should have your root partition listed first in your fstab (you have /boot listed before /) IIRC it can cause problems if you don't have it first.

This part worries me the most. I seems like your HD and its partitions are corrupted some way. Can you find some way to run
fsck /dev/hda1
fsck /dev/hda3

or
fdisk -l /dev/hda

Your fstab looks alright, same order in my system
Your grub.conf looks fine too
Your kernel settings should be right too.

Ok, I removes root=LABEL=/ from append option of my lilo.conf and added root=/dev/hdc5 and it booted fine. Now I just need to find out about why it's not using devfsd and why it doesn't see my ethernet card. I'm assuming the two problems intertwine. ;)
