Instead of emerging xmms-cdaudio, try xmms-cdread. Then just read the file /dev/cdrom in xmms should work. Good luck,

In the options for the cdaudio player in XMMS, there is an option to enable direct transfer instead of using the chintzy analog cable from the drive to the sound card headers. If you long since threw away all of those cables like me, enable that option, and voila!

Sweet, it works.

XMMS still won't play audio cd. It can read the cd and get the # and length of tracks, but when I hit play it doesn't do anything. I did emerge the audiocd plugin

Try digital audio extraction instead of analog. If analog, check that the CD isn't muted in alsamixer (assuming your using alsa).

OK a couple of basics just so everyone's clear.

You cant mount an audio CD , it does not contain a file system. Forget /mnt/cdrom , forget fstab , forget usrs in mount options etc. It does not apply here.

Linux does not behave in a special way , it supports analogue audio (analagous for those who cant use a dictionary means something else) and digital audio.

It depends on what software you use as to which it will do and whether you need the little cably thing running from your CD drive to the soundcard.

For example cdplay is simply a CD controller , it tells the CD drive to play track1 or what ever then waits till it is done. If you cntl-C at this point the player will still run until the end of the track.

This require the cable since it is the CD player producing the analogue signal.

xine /gxine /kaffine etc use digital audio via the bus , you do not need the cable.

All of these options will require a working sound card and ALSA or OSS config.
You can confirm that is OK by playing a sound or mp3 from the harddrive without even worrying about your CD .

Now when you say it is "not working", what is it that is not working ?
