I am looking to install some instant messenger clients for use with icq, jabber, irc and msn. Does anybody have any recommendations for one that these 'protocols'? I know there are quite a lot, have tried gaim, licq, lirc, psi. These manage to do the job but maybe there are some better clients out there

I like sim, but it doesn't run very stable on my system (perhaps because of amd64) and it doesn't support irc (at least I don't think it does).
Also kopete isn't bad at all and supports all protocols you listed.

by better i mean for instance useful features, ease of use and functionality. for instance some of the clients i am using are difficult to configure, don't have many add. features. Appearance comes into it as well, are there clients out there that have a nicer interface, once again, easy to use? just tryna find out what the general popular consensus is. thanks

If you use Gnome, you should definitely try to run Gaim... It's becoming more and more integrated to this Desktop Environment, and has a lot of great features... Especially in the new Gnome 2.10, it interacts quite well with Evolution 2.2.

Another thing worth mentioning is the new release of gaim-vv, the multimedia version of Gaim... The guys just released version 1.2.0, supporting Yahoo! video, and it's just the beginning... So maybe we'll be able to do videoconferencing with Gaim in a not-so-far future?
