Hi,
I have been using Gentoo since December and have figured out many things up to kde installed and a bit of customization. I see there is a very nice website Kde look with many items like:
- Wallpapers
- Themes / Styles
- Window Decorations
- Icons
- System Sounds
- Screensavers
- Splash Screens
- KDE Improvements
- ....
but somehow, I don't get it. It is simple to install an application when it is in portage and is not masked. When instead I see an application outside of portage I start having troubles because I fear from installing (mostly because I do not know how) it. This kde-look.org site is the classic example.
I wish to ask:
1) Wallpapers, Icons and System Sounds: I believe here I just would download what I wish and save it locally. Where is the centralized wallpaper directory I would save the downloaded files, respectively?
2) Themes / Styles, Window Decorations, Screensavers, Splash Screens, KDE Improvements: How do I install it? I guess I first have to choose the correct version of kde ( KDE 3.2 + in my case as have kde 3.2.2 ). Then, I would download the file. What is next? This is what I do not know. Also, do I have to install the Theme-Manager or not and what is needed for?
3) KDE Imporvements: Exmple is Improving KDE. How would I proceed here?
4) I see many nice desktops out there. One good example would be this
How to obtain the upper right corner data I have with gkrellm? How to obtain the weather forcast? How to get the nice taskbar at the bottom? Also, I see nice newsfeeds as trasparent to the wallpaper and many other nice stuff.
Is there a generic install approach so that once I understand the most important steps I then am able to download and install what I wish?
Sorry for this questions, but I wish once and for all solve this issue so that I can start making my kde look better. Please assist me with this so that I can learn well.
Thank you for your time and assistance in letting my learn.

Easy!
This up right corner is occupied by karamba or superkaramba. Nice thing but very ram consuming and actually completely useless.
For kde to look better the best idea is to:
a joke of course...
Getting back to the subject, each item on kde-look.org has a description on how to build and install it, follow it.
Wallpapers can be stored in any folder of your choice, like ~/Wallpapers...
Icons - there're some icon sets in portage - try them, too.
Themes - theme manager allows you to choose a local theme file.
The same with styles (color schemes)... As I said - the desc are on the website... |
