k, I fianlly got all my kernel modules and paramaters right. I have the camera being detected in the kernel and the /dev/video0 and /dev/v4l/video0 devices are being created automatically.
When I try and run the following apps i get the followin results.

cat /dev/v4l/video0 > test.mpg; mplayer test.mpg
unrecognized format

xawtv
/dev/video0 [v4l2]: no overlay support
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway

What are the permissions masks for /dev/v4l/video0 and /dev/v41/? I learned that some devices (my tv tuner card) had to explicitly be 0777 or else I could not use them in tvtime.

The default perms for my IBM webcam work perfectly fine though...

Try chmod'ing them 0777. It might be an issue with the SUID part of the permission.
