|
|
I was wondering if it was possible to install and use Squid on my desktop style computer, which I run Fluxbox other desktop apps, using squid as a proxy + content filter for two other computers on the netowrk. It seems to me I would need to have two ehternet cards instead of one. And with my current setup I have all three ocmputers connected to the HUB, which is connected in turn to the ADSL router, which is the DHCP server+Gateway. I am under the impression that I would need to plug two computers into the router, which would be plugged into my computer, adn my computer would be plugged into the adsl modem..
Does anyone have any info or web site links that I could read |

This is how I do it:
ADSL Router/Modem -> Server -> Hub/Switch -> LAN
Yes you'll need 2 NICs in the server to do this kind of setup. It was really easy to setup for me with help from the Gentoo Wiki - check out there for tonnes of HOWTOs! _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

alternately, set it up so that your router/modem doesn't assign ip's but your machine does...tehn everyone has to go and get an ip from there, you set the gateway to said server, then they all go through your machine anyways, even with only one nic. _________________ while(true) {self.input(sugar);} ![Twisted Evil :twisted:](images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif) |

I have squid running on a desktop computer. I use it for ssh tunnel. I ssh in from what ever network so that they see nothing but the encrypted traffic. But to the point, it only has one nic card. All you have to do on the other computers is point them to you for proxy. You don't have to add another nic or setup a network for them, but the problem with this is if the users know that, this is how u have it setup. then just turn off pointing to your server and then they are back to the normal internet. That is if they know what is going on. |

Adding another NIC costs what, £10. And it gives you much more advantages like being able to specify firewall rules for each NIC, etc. Personally I'd go with 2 NICs, but it's up to you... _________________ AMD64 3200+, 1024MB RAM, Gentoo Linux

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am probably thinking of getting another Eth Card, as that seems to be the most logical thing to do. Soz for the way I wrote the first post too, I wrote it late at night inbetween TV commercials - hehe. Well, I will get the card, and will probably ending up asking some more questions. Thanks. |
