Bare with me
I just recently got Gentoo loaded up on my laptop, and I ran through one of the games threads and emerged some of the suggested free games people mentioned, like VegaStrike, Ltris, etc. I am using KDE.
The problem is, none of them seem to work. Only Wesnoth and Ltris show up in my Games directory in the KDE Menu ( I have tried going into Menu Editor and Saving, which I was told sometimes will fix the problem of newly emerged packages not showing up. Did not make anything new appear ), and when I try to run either of them, nothing happens ( or in the case of Ltris, the window opens, then immediatly closes )
For VegaStrike, I'm aware i need to run VSinstall and VSLauncher, however, neither of these applications seem to do anything. I get a choice to change options (VSInstall ) or to save/load my game/mission and some other game related options (VSLauncher ), but trying to actualy play the game causes all windows to just close out on me
The only thing I can think is that I didnt add myself properly to the Games group? I read up on modifying the user accounts to add the Games group, but I was a little wary as it says this overwrites your group access, rather than append it, so I would need to make sure I add myself to all appropriate groups... and thats IF this is even my real problem, which something tells me it probably isnt...
Ya, any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I really really want to stick with using Linux on this laptop and get a good handle on the basics, like installing and playing a simple game, etc. Dont send me running back to the version of XPHome my laptop came with.... You have to be in the games groups to be able to play most games.
To add yourself to the games group do this, as root:
1. Run groups <username> to see what groups the user belongs to now.
Code: | # groups foobar
users wheel |
2. Run usermod -G <the groups you got in 1>,games <username>
Code: | # usermod -G users,wheel,games foobar |
3. ???
4. Profit! |

Thanks for the tip, I was looking for a quick way to see group access ( I need to remember to think command line more often..)
Unfortunatly, this didnt solve my problem as I was already a member of Games...
So I'm back to square1 here with this problem. I still cannot load any of these games I have installed... Clearly theres some noob thing Im overlooking, or did overlook previous to this, and is now biting me from behind
Once again, any and all help welcome
Hilarious SouthPark reference, btw
*Edited once I remembered what that Profit! joke was from _________________ I know absolutely nothing about this Lee-Knicks guy, but everyone else here seems to know him... |

Try starting the games from konsole and see if you get an error.
Edit: Konsole the terminal emulator in KDE, not text mode btw. |
