Finished the final stages of build linux 2005.0 on boot I am getting this error:

VFS: cannot open root device "804" or unknown -block -block(8,4)

Please apend correct "root=" boot option

kernal panic not synching VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown -block(8,4)

any suggestions guys

Chances are that you don't have the correct driver loading for your disk controller.

Boot up with the livecd and:

cat /proc/pci

You should be able to find out the model of your IDE controller by looking through the output.
Then make sure you have it compiled into your kernel.

this was due to my lilo.conf not seeing the correct kernel version :/
