Finished the final stages of build linux 2005.0 on boot I am getting this error:
VFS: cannot open root device "804" or unknown -block -block(8,4)
Please apend correct "root=" boot option
kernal panic not synching VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown -block(8,4)
any suggestions guys

Chances are that you don't have the correct driver loading for your disk controller.
Boot up with the livecd and:
cat /proc/pci
You should be able to find out the model of your IDE controller by looking through the output.
Then make sure you have it compiled into your kernel. |

this was due to my lilo.conf not seeing the correct kernel version :/ |
