I don't know if this would be the right forum or not.. but it's as close as anything else...

Compaq Proliant 800 with external Ultra-Wide SCSI2 storage tower for drives (3x 4.3GB)
PentiumPro 200MHz
192 MB EDO RAM

Boot up with Gentoo LiveCD, run 'cfdisk' and I get errors about all drives being read-only. Saying I do not have write permissions.

I get the same problem with slackware discs. FreeBSD 5.3 worked right off the bat.. Debian worked as well(though I didn't actually install because I didn't want to).. I was just testing after slackware and Gentoo wouldn't work..

Has anyone heard of this problem.. I googles my heart out with no luck.. I don't understand why I would not have write access from the LiveCD...

Please Help!!

I can't do any of that stuff because I have no write access to the drives... emerge doesn't work from just the disc.. you have to crate the file system, extract everything, extract portage, etc... before emerge works.. also.. no mountpoints because i can't do anything with it.. fdisk -l does show the /dev/ida/c0d0p1 for the RAID5 array... but that's it.. any other ideas?

Duh, I am being a retard. How far can you get in the boot before it fails?

Also, you SHOULD be able to mount the drive but just not as rw, so you should be able to run 'mount' no problem.

it boots all the way up to the prompt.. but of course.. the first order of business is 'cfdisk' which is where it warns me that it is read-only and it has no write permissions... i tried to 'mount /dev/ida/c0d0p1 /mnt/gentoo' just to see if it would work and it did not.. do i need to specify filesystem types or anything?? I didn't think Linux can use UFS?
