I've noticed recently that i'm getting slow transfers from reiser4 partitions in the area of 1-1.5mb/s over 100mbps lan.

I've checked all the normal things like dma which is on, just to double check i transfered onto the drive from another computer (using reiser 3.6) and it was shooting up well past reiser4 :?

The most drastic problem thats come from this is for writing dvd/cd's, as dvds can barely do stable transfers at 2x.

Code:

hdparm -ti /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

 Model=WDC WD800JB-00CRA1, FwRev=17.07W17, SerialNo=WD-WMA8E2203163
 Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec SpinMotCtl Fixed DTR>5Mbs FmtGapReq }
 RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=57600, SectSize=600, ECCbytes=40
 BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=8192kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=off
 CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=156301488
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
 PIO modes:  pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes:  mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
 AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
 Drive conforms to: device does not report version:

 * signifies the current active mode

 Timing buffered disk reads:  126 MB in  3.04 seconds =  41.51 MB/sec

Code:

uname -a
Linux Phoenix 2.6.11-nitro2 #1 Wed Mar 23 03:07:56 GMT 2005 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1700+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

I know you've been told this before but Reiser4 is still experimental .

There have been a few real world cases where Reiser4 has not performed as expected, specifically with samba.

If you have upgraded to a newer version of reiser4progs you may be experiencing a problem due to some recent changes. Other than that it's a Namesys issue.

Good luck!!

Well first off i was using a number of different systems to transfer files, dcc(irc), ftp, http etc.

The point on reiser4progs could well be connected so i'll do a few tests, i'm also interested as to weither 'updating' the filesystem with fsck etc would make any difference so i'll have a play on that as well.

Remember as with all 'Unsupported Software' unless you talk about it it won't improve to be stable ;)

Maybe you're hitting the "reiser4 is a huge CPU hog" problem.

I guess I should read your problem as slow READS. The writes seem to be ok, because you get the speed when writing on it from another machine.

Try the latest love patchset, it includes the very latest reiser4 snapshot.

My reiser4 drive results:

/dev/hda:
Timing cached reads: 1824 MB in 2.00 seconds = 910.77 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 182 MB in 3.02 seconds = 60.23 MB/sec

/dev/hda:

Model=Maxtor 6B200P0, FwRev=BAH41B10, SerialNo=B40GXLEH
Config={ Fixed }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=57
BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=8192kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=268435455
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5 *udma6
AdvancedPM=yes: disabled (255) WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: (null):

Doesn't your drive support udma6? Maybe a wrong BIOS setting?
