I am thinking of buying a Plextor pw708UF Firewire/USB2 DVD-Writer. As I dislike USB, I will be mainly using it over Firewire (I have a SB Audigy Platinum with Firewire).
Will it work?

I've bought one. It works on my laptop.
My kernel is 2.6.3-r1.

But the problem is it can only works with the firewire. I tried to use it in USB2.0. But the system can't find out the cdrom drive. Don't know if it is the problem of my pcmcia adabpter for USB2.0

The other problem is it can not work with k3b, when I start k3b, the system always crashes if I have connected this cdrom to it. I try to burn the CD with cdrecord, it works. For DVD-R, I burned with cdrecord-ProDVD ( actrually I use cdrecord-wrapper.sh). They all works fine.
For DVD+R, I found it does not work.

I have this burner and had it connected via USB 2.0 with no problems. However, I recently decided that I hate having it connected via USB in the front of the computer and would like to coneect it via firewire (in the back of the box).

I have various firewire items enabled in the kernel. And when I run dmesg after plugging in the drive I see:
Code:

ieee1394: Node changed: 0-00:1023 -> 0-01:1023
ieee1394: Node added: ID:BUS[0-00:1023]  GUID[00d0a910020035a3]

However, I am not sure how to get it working past this. Any advice from you guys that have it working? (I am currently on a 2.6.9 kernel and moving to 2.6.10-r4 kernel (gentoo-dev-sources).

Thanks.

After my upgrade to 2.6.10, I am having better luck. dmesg now outputs:
Code:

Vendor: PLEXTOR   Model: DVDR   PX-708A    Rev: 1.03
Type:   CD-ROM                             ANSI SCSI revision: 02
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi2, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Attached scsi generic sg2 at scsi2, channel 0, id 0, lun 0,  type 5

The drive now shows up in K3B again. Will have to test out burning later. If anyone has any other tips, they would be much appreciated.

It worked for me on the 2.6.8 kernel over USB. I have used K3b. At the moment I have problems with it, that is after I upgraded the system with 2.6.11-r4 kernel and did emerge world it is not working. I'm looking for a solution at the moment.
