Upgrade problem

did a recent emerge -uDv world with requisite revdep rebuild things and such and after dispatch conf fixes the config files (none of which ive ever modified) i cannot su to root. The user name attempting to su is in the wheel group.....

Unfortuantly i do not have the files i changed, however i do have cvs set up, anyone able to walk me through reinstating the files to the old ones??
