I just "almost" finished off the gentoo install.. I seem to have problems getting grub or lilo to work in my gentoo-amd64 install.
I have 3 Hard Drives in my computer.
1 Is 18 Gigs (I have gentoo installed on this)
1 is 80 Gigs (I have older xp backupntfs on this)
1 is 250 Gigs (I have windows XP on this which I want to use and this is an SATA drive)
I have attempted to setup grub properly/lilo but they do not work.

Grub gives Error 17, Lilo just spews 999999999 when I boot.
When I check fdisk for drives /dev/hda shows up as some 250mb non existant thing.
/dev/hdb doesnt even work.
/dev/hdc = 80 Gigger
/dev/hdd = 18 Gigger
/dev/sda = 250 gigger

So How should I go about setting up Grub or Lilo
I tried setting in lilo /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd as my drives and booting, but it did not seem to work. Lilo didn't even show and a bunch of 99 99 99 did.
Grub spews an error 17..
I tried (hd0) as my root and (hd1)
any ideas?

Help would be greatly appreciated.. this has been pissing me off for 1-2 hours now.
All I want is for the SATA windows xp drive to boot and for gentoo to boot.

Hi,

I am only familar with Grub so ill try and tackle that one -

One thing I noticed with your post is that you said "I tried (hd0) as my root and (hd1)". This to me means you specified your root partition as a hdd and not a partition. You should have something similar to the Gentoo Install Handbook:

Quote:
grub> root (hd0,0) (Specify where your /boot partition resides)

When in the grub "environment" you can also use tab-completion to aid you along the way. An easy test to determine if you have the right hard drive would be to type (hdn, <press tab> and confirm that this matches the partion table of your gentoo drive.

Hope it helps,

Darryl
