kde-meta doesn't seem to have even a ~amd64 flag yet. Is it advisable to try emerging it yet?

Though I'm running x86 and therefore cannot speak about the arch-specific issues, I can tell you it's definitivly worth upgrading KDE.
You ask if it's worth trying to compile.. Well, give me a reason why it wouldn't? ;) If you have bad luck it simpely won't build...

Good luck!

I'm running 3.3 right now, how would I go about upgrading to 3.4?

Would I have to unmerge all things KDE related, then emerge the new ones? Or is there an update feature built into emerge/portage ?

kde-3.3 and kde-3.4 use different SLOTs, which means they can be installed side by side. On the other hand there is almost never a need to unmerge something before installing a new version. Portage is safe in unmerging the old version after emeging the new one.

But KDE is now split into separate ebuilds. In kde-3.4 I first encountered problems just "emerge kde" or "emerge kde-meta" or sth like that on an amd64. I found some good threads like this in the forum. I started emerging kde-base/kdebase-meta (putting required packages in /etc/portage/package.keywords). After some days I unmerged kde-3.3.

Thanks andrewd18, very useful ;-)

Slots? Eh? I presumed that it would unmerge 3.3 ... when I was working thrugh putting the packages into package.keywords I got bored after about 9, is there a way to list / automatically add them?

I'll check out that link when I get home.

Thanks again guys.

KDE 3.4.0 works beautifully over here, highly recommended. :)

I emerged with "emerge kde" and then after a day or so removed KDE 3.3 since it was still there because it is in a different slot. So you don't have to worry about pretty much anything, really, with this process.

EDIT: I'm using ~amd64, and here's my package.keywords:

Code:
cat /etc/portage/package.keywords
x11-misc/entrance
x11-libs/esmart
media-libs/edje
dev-libs/embryo
x11-libs/evas
dev-libs/eet
dev-db/edb
x11-libs/ecore
media-libs/imlib2
media-libs/epsilon
media-libs/epeg
media-gfx/entice
x11-wm/waimea
x11-misc/xcompmgr
dev-util/anjuta
sci-astronomy/stellarium
=dev-lang/mono-1.1.4
dev-libs/icu
x11-themes/baghira
dev-util/screem
games-fps/americas-army
net-misc/d4x
kde-base/kview
kde-base/kdelibs
kde-base/arts
dev-dotnet/xsp
gnome-base/gnome
app-editors/gedit
gnome-extra/gal
gnome-base/gnome-desktop
#dev-dotnet/gtk-sharp

One of these days I'm going to need to clean house on it.

KDE 3.4 is working really well overall. There are still a few small issues with GCC visibility and a subtle bug in KDE 3.4 which causes segfaults in kasteroids. Due to this issue (which is just about resolved now), kdegames-meta and kde-meta cannot be marked ~amd64 until kasteroids is. I am using the desktop full time, and apart from a few small issues still outstanding it is a very good and stable release.

I am really busy right now with real life stuff, but will hopefully have the remaining issues resolved fairly soon. I do try to read feedback if there are still issues remaining on amd64 with KDE 3.4 but the split ebuilds work very well. Please do search for/file bugs in Bugzilla if you spot any we haven't yet ;)

@turkystuffing
taken from the "split ebuilds"-thread in Desktop Environment:

ls /usr/portage/kde-base | awk '{ print "kde-base/"$1" ~amd64" }' >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

Thanks for that copy tip, I keep my file a bit more organised though so have copied it to a text file then transfered. I won't post it here but if any amd64 devs want to see what is working for me but still masked I'll send you it.

I'm about to emerge so I'll keep ya'll posed.

Meh. I don't like Gnome.

It's a personal preference though. To each his/her own..

I still would like to recommend kde-meta packages. But you'll need to unmask all 314 (or something) ebuilds. I have a copy for ~x86 though, so perhaps someone else have the correct one for ~amd64.
When it's there just emerge kdebase-meta <add more stuff you want here like> kopete <or/and> kmail
and so on.. :) Good luck!

You don't actually need the ~amd64 bit for packages in packages.keywords - here is what is in my packages.unmask/packages.keywords for KDE. I think they are all there, let me know if any are missing. As I said kasteroids, and the metas that dep on it are still not keyworded. You can just append this list to your existing packages.keywords.

The KDE 3.4 announcement has all the details about what's hot and new or simply improved upon in it's latest release. And if you really want to dig and find out what's changed since 3.3, here's that page.

One of the best updates for me personally is that Konqueror's CSS support is getting boosted nicely, since I use CSS a lot, but it's also really nice that KWin plays nicely with Xcomposite. :)

Ok, thanks for all the info guys! Tip, if you want sfx use=arts... (yep, silly mistake)

I'v installed it after but it segfaults when I try and use it...

And next time I'll have a proper read of the announcements before asking a silly question like that!
