How much of a slowdown does one experience when using file-based loopback filesystem?

Is it absolutely crazy to use a file-based loopback partition for a /home/user directory? I suspect yes, but would love some confirmation.

Is there any possible advantage to doing so?

I haven't tried it, so I cannot comment on speed. But the advantage is that you can use crypto-loop to encrypt your home directory.

Thanks for that tip.

What other practical uses do loopback filesystem's have?

From personal experience, I know it is possible to mount ISO files... hence if you need to get at the contents of a downloaded ISO, there is no need to burn. Anything else?
