modprobing wireless PCI card automatically starts interface

I have hotplug and coldplug installed, but not running. Everytime I modprobe my network card (ath_pci), net.ath0 gets started. Is there a way to stop this behavior? I sometimes switch between wireless networks, and its really annoying given the state of the madwifi drivers, switching from an encrypted one to a non-encrypted one results in wlan_wep still being loaded and used by ath_pci. When this happens, the network doesn't work at all untill wlan_wep is removed. So I have to rmmod all the network card drivers, and modprobe them again, only to have wlan_wep still being loaded (and therefore my network doesn't work on an un-encrypted one) because something in gentoo starts net.ath0 automatically. So.. I guess.. How do I stop the network interfaces from loading automatically. That'll help out my first problem, and if you know how to fix the madwifi problem (switchin from encrypted to un-encrypted still results in wlan_wep being loaded and in use).. go on and let me know too. Any help is appreciated, sorry if this sounds like I'm angry, its just a little frustrating. Thanks.

Well, i figured out the madwifi thing. Talking to one of the developers, its a known bug that when you switch from an encrypted network to an unencrypted one, wlan_wep remains in use, and won't work with a regular network. To fix that, if you "iwpriv ath0 authmode 1" and then run "iwconfig ath0 enc off" (that turns off encryption, but for some reason the iwpriv command has to be ran too bofore iwconfig), then switch networks, it works. wlan_wep is still loaded and in use (as stated by lsmod), but the network switching works. So I guess my 2n'd problem is solved, but I still would not like the network interfaces to be started when the modules are loaded.
