|
|
okay, first... is there anywhere on the net that I can get more than just the ones on the CD?
second... how do I make GRP packages out of the software I emerge / install...?
I'm wanting to make a pseudo-Gentoo distribution with more variety of pre-compiled packages (mostly for personal use)...
Thanks... |

In order to have emerge build binary packages that are suited for the environment you compiled them in as backups, the easiest way is to add "buildpkg" to your FEATURES line in /etc/make.conf. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Well, I guess what I meant is are there any other pre-compiled packages for download for Gentoo? (Similar to the ones on the CD) |

Not trying to sound dissmissive but, pre-compiled packages for gentoo defeats the whole purpose of gentoo in the first place. Personally I use GRP for KDE because it takes me 24 hours to compile the whole thing. But anything else can be compiled in minutes. So where is the benefit in generic binaries that can't leverage the strengths of individual configs?
You might as well run redhat. |

I know it defeats the purpose of Gentoo in some ways...
Unfortunately, trying to compile all of that software on my PII 300 Laptop takes MANY days... and quite frankly, I just want to get it up and running...
I don't like Redhat or Mandrake cause of all the proprietary stuff thrown in... I think Gentoo is great cause you put EXACTLY just what you want on it... But I don't have several days to wait on the system to install... |

If so, then make a chroot designed for your laptop on it, set up the environment appropriately, and then emerge things with the buildpkg option. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
