Well after getting a base system up and running with gnome and everything, I decided it was time to start working on the sound drivers. wnet back into my kernel and added module support for my soundcard (snd-cmipci). copied over the sysmap and kernel (over my original kernal and sysmap) and rebooted.

Now comes my trouble. I now only get "GRUB "
so grub shell is not even loading, anyone got any suggestions?

I am using kernel 2.6.11-r4

Thanks.

I've had this happen a few times.

It sounds like grub is not finding grub.conf, or else it is not finding the splash image. Until it is fixed you can issue commands in grub, that would be similar to those in the grub.conf. (Grub has tab completion) For example:

root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r5
boot

Something like this (with appropriate hd and kernel locations) should work until you figure out what is going wrong. By the way, never (and I mean never) copy over the old kernel and sysmap without a backup. This is a recipe for disaster. Always keep a functional backup around, and listed in grub.conf, so that you can boot an old kernel if the new one isn't right.

Yeah I know about keeping a good kernel around, I was just being lazy this morning... and I get to pay for it...

Well the trouble with your idea about using the grub shell is that the system is not getting that far, I am not even getting to the shell, like using lilo, when you had trouble it only displayed part of lilo word to tell you what kinda trouble you are having, but with this its grub... Am I talking in circles yet?

You should probably try reinstalling grub to the MBR again. Although it might have been working before, that is not to say something wasn't wrong and it waited until your kernel upgrade to surface. Sound impossible? I had been rebooting my computer for some time, always noticed it did not show the grub splashimage. Could not understand this, but just ignored it. I upgraded to 2.6.11 the other day and all I got was the word "Grub". Reinstalling grub to the MBR fixed my problem, and now the splashimage works as it should have been doing all along.

Ah, yes that fixed it. just redid the grub-install command and all is better, now to get a good standard (fully working) kernel and keep it in backup.

Thanks for the help.
