When start xine, the splash comes up, the black screen box comes up and the control panel comes up but the splash doesn't go away. Xine just hangs. I have tried recompiling xine-lib as well as xine-ui. GXine results in a seg fault. Using 2005.0 fresh install.
Code:

USE="acpi multilib nptl nptlonly -qt -kde -gnome -motif alsa -oss -esd -arts
     cups bzip2 ldap xprint sasl kerberos fbcon directfb sysfs mpeg oggvorbis
     flac gnutls hal howl samba aspell spell"

The latest alsa-lib (1.0.9_rc2) is broken. Just put it in your /etc/portage/package.mask and re-emerge.

No go. Tried various options
gentoo-sources
* ALSA builtin
* ALSA modules
* ALSA builtin - alsa-* 1.0.8
* ALSA modules - alsa-* 1.0.8
* alsa-driver
* ALSA builtin - alsa-* 1.0.7
* ALSA modules - alsa-* 1.0.7

ck-sources
* ALSA builtin
* ALSA modules
* ALSA builtin - alsa-* 1.0.8
* ALSA modules - alsa-* 1.0.8
* alsa-driver
* ALSA builtin - alsa-* 1.0.7
* ALSA modules - alsa-* 1.0.7

No matter what I get
Code:
$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

I can load/unload snd_intel8x0 fine.

Still no matter what I try, no alsa. Maybe it is 2005.0. I just did a clean stage1 2005.0 install. With 2004.3 stage1 I had alsa working. Anyone have any other advice?

Sorry theonlymcc, that was the only problem with alsa I've experienced in the last year.

[edit] Did you try gentoo bugs? Simetimes I find solutions there.

No bugs listed that I could find. I have even tried an old Sound Blaster Audigy from 2 years ago. Different card and still the same results.
