Could anyone please share their experiences with the Radeon 9700 in the Gentoo Linux environment? I need to make a decision soon regarding what grfx card to get. I know the nVidia support for Linux is good, but the technology isn't really comparable to ATI at this point :\ |

I tried the R9000. It uses the same drivers. The ebuild for the ATI drivers is marked as unstable but it worked ok for me.
The packge comes with a program to create a XF86Config. It worked more or less ok.
The drivers seemed stable (never crashed X) but i had some issues with some Q3 mods.
I did not keep the card because i tought it was not a big improve over my GF2-Pro. If it was a R9700 or R9700Pro it would probably be better. _________________ Gustavo Felisberto

It's most certainly GNU/Linux, not Linux. Read more at

Well, I got a 9500/9700 board to play with. I first worked with it under windows to verify that I could turn the 128MB 9500 into a 9700 and it worked fine.
Currently, I have it set up as a 9500 under linux. After some difficulty, I got the drivers to install. When I shutdown, the screen is out to lunch, but it does shutdown.
I tried both the botmatch-antalus and flyby-antalus and both are exceedingly slow. I don't have the numbers in front of me right now, but it seemed barely playable. I guess I still need to tweak a bit. If this persists, out it goes and in comes a new ti4200.
I'm running a 1.4Ghz Tbird, 512MB. UT2003 tests performed at 1280x1024 w/ 32bit color, and all settings max. Under windows, this was fast and smooth as silk. Could be because the board was acting as a 9700 then. I can't imagine this huge of a difference though!
Any thoughts? |

Gah. You lucky sod.
Mine hacks into a 9700 OK but I get checkerboard-itis in Windows. Still, I can OC pretty mentally so I don't really care - still a bargain.
So far as I'm aware, there's no hack available for the Linux drivers so yes, the card will be running as a stock 9500 (i.e. stock clock speed also). This is probably the source of your poor framerates. _________________ wibble |
