kk i installed a new kernel on to my unix board with the help of the gentoo website ive done it like 5 6 time already... now i finally got a fully working gen kernel 2.6.11-r4 clean shes fine.... my network cards are detected for ne2k-pci (clone) and a via-rhine card...
but the eth0 wont recive an ip address through DHCP i dont know what happened.... the last kenrel that i had was fine and dhcp worked on both cards.... i know that it is not my internet because i switch the cable from unix to my windows client when my LAN is down, the dhcp works fine on win2k...
i ALSO downloaded the brand new knoppix CD and tried it in my unix machine and it came up fine but dhcp still did not work....
i tried switching NIC cards to a diffrent brand and gen kernel was fine with it and still no dhcp...
ive re-merged iptables , dhcp, dhcpcd, so many times its mind boggalling but i dont know if i would have to on a new kernel... remember i cannot download newer pkgs no net..
so im stuck hear and i donno what to do
it sounds like software at first but then why wouldnt knoppix work??? it woulda been fine...
maybe i got a short on the board? or maybe my touchin fingers made some bad ESD?? i donno ne help? _________________ "He who has the most toys when he dies, wins" |

just guessing (I'm newbie, so I'm sure u know more than I do), but is your kernel .configure file from the 2.4 kernel? ifconfig eth0 up doesn't work? have you updated the modules.autoload to kernel 2.6? (If u had 2.4) |

I've had a few problems with my gigabit network cards in the past. Sometimes they wouldn't initialise properly. I usually find that reloading the cards module (rmmod, modprobe) often solves the problem.
If you post the output from and your /etc/conf.d/net and your dhcp clients config files (/etc/dhcp/dhcpcd.conf ??) then I'll have a quick look.
Just thinking out loud....
You haven't changed any of your BIOS settings have you?
(I'm just trying to work out why dhcp wouldn't work for Knoppix)
Do your network cards have any activity lights on them?
Do they flash to show that you are receiving data?
Have you tried a different network cable?
Where is the DHCP server?
What are you plugging the gentoo box into (modem)?
Have the settings on the DHCP server been changed?
Have you tried running the Knoppix CD on your win2k box to see if the DHCP client works?
Can you see anything DHCP/network card related in your Gentoo box's logs (/var/log/????) ?
Have you tried the Gentoo LiveCD?
Sorry I can't be more help. |

kk
thx for the reply yes the net cards have active like lights on the back and my topology is as follows
WAN (net) >>>>>> Cable Modem >>> HUB >>> >>> Unix >>> win2k client
the win2k client gets fine dhcp like i said from the cord and i know it isnt any thing besides the unix box...
ill try the brand new gentoo live cd i just downloaded tonight.
No BIOS / CMOS settings have been changed
the dhcp server should be running on my unix machine
ill also run knoppix on my win2k machine to make sure that DHCP will work.. but im pretty sure it will _________________ "He who has the most toys when he dies, wins" |

Here's my topology
WAN (net) >>>>>> Adsl Modem >>> Linux (firewall) >>> HUB >>> linux client (desktop)
I used to have my firewall box grab its IP from the ADSL modem via DHCP. The firewall also has a DHCP server activated to serve out IPs to machines connected to my HUB. My desktop machine (and other equipment) obtains its IP from my firewall machine.
The Adsl Modem runs a DHCP server and serves an IP to my firewall box.
Does your unix box have a DHCP client running as well as a DHCP server?
Does your win2k box get an IP from your unix box ok?
What program are you using for your DHCP client?
What program are you using for your DHCP server? dhcpd, dnsmasq?
If you want to post your DHCP config files I can compare them with mine.
Is your win2k box connect directly into your unix box? if so, are you using a crossover cable?
If your unix box is running a firewall, what happens when you turn it off?
When you plug the win2k box into your HUB/Modem, what IP do you get?
When you plug the win2k box into your unix box, what IP do you get?
I used to use NTL for my broadband connection. If I remember correctly, I used to have to register my computer with the cable modem whenever I changed the network card.
Anyway, thats probably enough questions for now |
