|
|
Hello all,
I was able to successfuly emerge kde-3.4.0 using split ebuilds by:
(1) unmasking a lot of ~amd64 packages and
(2) by creating a portage overlay for kde-meta-3.4.0 with ~amd64 keyword added.
For (1) I used the list mentioned here: http://haley.myserver.org/kde_beta_howto.php
For (2) I just copied the whole kde-base/kde-meta directory and edited the .ebuild file (I just put "~amd64" in KEYWORDS)
So, if even the sparc people marked the kde-meta-3.4.0.ebuild file with "~sparc", then why is it still not marked as "~amd64" ?
Then again some problems popped up (I've searched the 'net and they look quite common):
* KControl does not show in KMenu
* kmenuedit does not save the changes, so the above cannot be added manually
* There are no sub-categories in KMenu directories (e.g. in "Games") -- every one is flat
* I've put in my /etc/make.conf and then after emerging kde-i18n I've found that the KMenu directories are not named properly
(e.g. it's "Accessories" instead of "Akcesoria", etc).
How is your experience so far?
[Edit]
The whole emerge process using split ebuilds took about 8 hours on my machine (Athlon64 3000+, 1GB dual channel DDR 400, 120GB Seagate SATA, 2.6.11-nitro2 + reiser4 filesystem). _________________ Change is the only constant in the universe.

Maybe it's silly replying to my own post, but I spent a whole evening searching for solution without luck. And when I finally found one myself I thought about describing it, so maybe someone will find it useful too.
As I wrote earlier, I couldn't see KControl in my KDE 3.4.0 menu. Here's how to deal with it:
1. Press <Alt+F2>, this will bring a "Run command" dialog
2. Type "kcenter" there, and run it
3. Navigate to the "Desktop" -> "Panels" category
4. Click on the "Menus" tab
5. Check the "System" and/or "Preferences" optional menus
6. Apply the changes
This is the workaround I used. It's only for the time being, until I find a real solution. _________________ Change is the only constant in the universe.
