|

I'm on stage 3 of a stage 1 install via emerge --emptytree system when ./configure stops at autoconf-2.59-r6 because Code: | configure: error: perl is not found | .
A little amazed to see that perl isn't already on there, so I do a emerge -p --resume and sure enough, it's scheduled to build twenty or so packages later.
I haven't done gentoo in about a year or so. Normally I'd just emerge perl followed by an emerge system but this --emptytree option has me slightly freaked. I would want to continue the original emerge after building perl, but emerge --resume won't work because perl was built last, right? And if I do a emerge --emptytree system from scratch it wipes out everything I've already built, right?
So what do I do?
A possibly important detail, the emerge stopped because the java docs were no-fetch, so after fetching them myself I used emerge --resume to, um, resume the emerge.
Also, I'm on Powerbook, so should this go into Gentoo PPC? Hmmm. |

OK, after reading through more of the messages, the closest solution I was able to find suggests doing the emerge --resume, then suspending using Ctrl-Z, then opening a new console and doing whatever dependency emerges are needed, then going back and resuming the suspended emerge --resume.
Of course, when I do it, I suspend the process too soon, apparently I didn't give it enough time to load state, because when I resumed it gives me Code: | emerge: It seems we have nothing to resume... |
So don't do that.
Damn. |

More information, for anybody else who runs into this...
I wiped the HD and repeated the install, this time specifying -docs and -java in my USE flags, and it seems to be doing the trick: did the emerge -ep system before beginning stage 2 and sure enough, perl now gets built before autoconfig.
So I'm on my way to a clean Gentoo install on only my second try. On a Mac no less.
Not bad. |
