I'm installing Gentoo Linux 2005.0 and I'm getting an error saying that emerge is an unknown command.
I haven't tried it at any time before the first time you have to use it to update the Portage tree after chrooting. I was thinking maybe I missed a step but I went back and checked the handbook and I don't think I did. But I could be wrong. I have looked around a little here but can't seem to find anything relating to my problem.

Ideas?

did you unpack the stage starball to the correct partition?

if you are chrooted do:

Code:
ls -l /

if it is empty then you unpacked it to the wrong partition

you have either unpacked it to the wrong partition or to the RAMdisk, did it fail with a message like "no space left on the disk"?

Nope. it must be the wrong partition because I've gotten that error before when unpacking something to the RAMdisk.

you must
Quote:
cd /mnt/gentoo
before
Code:
tar -xvjpf stage?-*.tar.bz2
otherwise when you change root (chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash) you end up in a directory with nothing and all your base layout files gone
