I recently installed the "Network Time Protocol (NTP) daemon".
It configured itself to use server

Code:
127.127.1.0

--does anyone recognize this IP-address? Is this an IP-address
in the cable-modem itself? (The sparse doc that came with the
modem does not mention this IP-address. And `nslookup' does not
resolve it to a name.)

To access its own system clock, also called the local clock, NTP uses the pseudo IP address 127.127.1.0. This IP address must not be mixed up with 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of the localhost, i.e. the computer's loopback interface.

Ah... thank you. But now I'm confused on a Higher Level. My
entire /etc/ntp.conf is

Code:
restrict default noquery notrust nomodify
restrict 127.0.0.1
restrict 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 3
server 127.127.1.0
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift
logfile /var/log/ntp.log

Yet when I intentionally mis-set the software clock (SC), then
transfer the error to the hardware clock

Code:
hwclock --systohc

nonetheless, a

Code:
/etc/init.d/ntp-client restart

fixes the SC. Where is `ntp' getting its time from?

[edit]The information is in /etc/conf.d/ntp-client. It
has the lines

Code:
NTPCLIENT_CMD="ntpdate"
...
# Options to pass to the above command ...
NTPCLIENT_OPTS=" -b -u pool.ntp.org"
OMSystem.[/edit]
