Just finished my first install of Gentoo on my Dell Inspirion 2650. Boot for the first time, and the following appears:

PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:1f.6
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:1f.3
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:1f.5
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:1f.0
.
.
ICH3M: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev f9
PCI: Device 00:1f:1 not available because of resource collisions
ICH3M: (ide_setup_pci_device:) Could not enable device.

and it hangs at that point.

I'm not entirely sure which of the above devices is what piece of hardware (if someone can tell me how, I will happily catch everything sent to screen in the boot process for better diagnostic information). My hard drive is set up as follows:

hda1 : /boot
hda2 : swap
hda3 : /var
hda4 : extended
hda5 : /tmp
hda6 : /home
hda7 : /

It has been suggested to me that the problem might not actually be from PCI but may actually be due to PCMCIA support problem: the suggested fix for that seems to have no effect on the hang.

Any suggestions/advice/fixes? If someone has had this problem before, an account of how you fixed it would be very helpful. Many thanks!

Could this be some sort of ACPI problem? On some computers ACPI is used to control IRQ's. Do you have ACPI support in your kernel?

To be honest I don't remember if I compiled ACPI support into my kernel; if it is a default option it is likely that it was put in, but if not, my not remembering it probably means I did not add it in. I'm going to try reconfiguring and recompiling the kernel, and I'll give ACPI a try.

Worse comes to worse I'll just get new and interesting errors. If anyone who has configured a laptop kernel has any other advice on settings, I'm all ears.
