I've had this problem for months, and after all this time of frustration, I've finally decided to ask the Gentoo community to assist with my situation. I use a Linksys WPC55AG card for my wireless connection, and it is able to read 802.11A, 802.11B, and 802.11G. This card utilizes the Atheros chipset, and I have been told that I should use the madwifi driver for my card. I have set up everything by following the "Wireless Configuration and Startup" howto at Gentoo-Wiki (located at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Wireless_Configuration_and_Startup).

I also emerged the latest madwifi-driver, which, as of the current post, is madwifi-driver-0.1_pre20050224. iwconfig works correctly, or so it seems. However, I encounter a problem when trying to connect to any wireless access point, with or without encryption. I set the SSID correctly, but even after bringing eth0 down and ath0 up, the MAC address under iwconfig stays as FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF. The access points even show up under
Code:
iwlist ath0 scan
so I have no idea what the problem is. In addition, I used my Knoppix CD to try the wireless out, and it works perfectly, even with WEP.

I have all the correct modules loaded, as far as I know. The following is the output from lsmod:
Code:
Module                  Size  Used by
nvidia               3916572  14
ath_pci                52256  0
ath_rate_onoe           7304  1 ath_pci
ath_rate_amrr           7428  0
wlan_xauth              1408  0
wlan_wep                6016  0
wlan_tkip              10880  0
wlan_ccmp               6400  0
wlan_acl                4224  0
wlan                  106332  9 ath_pci,ath_rate_onoe,ath_rate_amrr,wlan_xauth,wlan_wep,wlan_tkip,wlan_ccmp,wlan_acl
ath_hal               147024  2 ath_pci

If I try
Code:
dhcpcd ath0
it takes about 20 seconds to try to get an IP, and then just times out and brings ath0 down.

Not sure if this helps but it's what I had to do...

For some reason scanning never picked anything up...so what I did was create the wireless config file and set my essid, wep key, and channel. Once I did that I connected without a problem.

I tried setting everything up in /etc/conf.d/wireless, but it still didn't work after that. I think that my problem is different in that I can actually scan and find the access points, but I just can't connect to them. Many thanks for your reply, johnnymac.

I'm using an orinoco gold a/b/g and it will not scan until I do a 'ifconfig ath0 up' at which point it works normally.

I found another thread here which explained this as a time out problem with a/b/g cards. Emerging the masked wireless-tools ebuild in portage fixed this for me.

I already emerged wireless-tools-28_pre6 a while back, and I was even desperate enough to unmerge madwifi-driver so that I could use the version from CVS. It seems that the CVS version didn't work either, even when I used
Code:
ifconfig ath0 up

My only option left is to use the ebuild from the link jphelps provided and hope that it works. I'll post back later on whether that ebuild is successful or not. Thanks a lot for replying, jphelps.

Edit: Well, I tried the new ebuild, but it didn't seem to work at first. Then, for no reason whatsoever, I tried something I never did before: I force-set the access point MAC address. Surprisingly enough, that allowed me to connect to my router. I can't be sure if the new ebuild helped or not as force-setting the MAC address was something I never tried before, but at least I have a working wireless connection now. My thanks goes out to johnnymac and jphelps.
