in the past, enabling vesa-tng in the kernel made my console fb just work automagically

this time i wasnt as fortunate

here is what dmseg says

Code:

vesafb: NVIDIA Corporation, NV34 Board - p162-11n, Chip Rev    (OEM: NVIDIA)
vesafb: VBE version: 3.0
vesafb: protected mode interface info at c000:e2e0
vesafb: pmi: set display start = c00ce316, set palette = c00ce380
vesafb: pmi: ports = 3b4 3b5 3ba 3c0 3c1 3c4 3c5 3c6 3c7 3c8 3c9 3cc 3ce 3cf 3d0
 3d1 3d2 3d3 3d4 3d5 3da
vesafb: hardware supports DCC2 transfers
vesafb: monitor limits: vf = 160 Hz, hf = 70 kHz, clk = 110 MHz
vesafb: invalid resolution, width not specified

and here is proof that i put the stuff in the kernel right, from .config

so what gives? i tired both a capital and lowercase X b/w the 1024 and the 768

Code:

CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
# CONFIG_FB_VESA_STD is not set
CONFIG_FB_VESA_TNG=y
CONFIG_FB_VESA_DEFAULT_MODE="1024x768@87"
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y

Try adding something like 'video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-24@85' to your kernel parameters.

1024x768@87? What kind of display is that?

Hum! Did not notice that, it seems a strange refresh, doesn't it?
I dont know also if you can specify the freq there, I always used the grub or lilo way, so I can change the resolution when I need to.

With vesafb-tng, you can specify the same parameters as you do in the command line.

when i first saw that about horizontal resolution i immediately thought that it should be a lowercase 'x' in the kernel config. i changed that and copied over the kernel and was stumped when that didnt fix it.

i was about to try your suggestion of addidng the line to grub.conf, even though it was bothering me that i knew i shouldnt have to do that, when i noticed that my boot partition wasnt being automagically mounted, and as such i never replaced the original kernel where it had the capital 'X'. myfstab is ok so i cant figure out why, but at least it works now, ill leave the booting thing for tomarrow

my monitor is an A72f from viewsonic. it is kinda old, but i'm a big fan of image (nice flat screen). its max ers @ 1280x1024 is only 60hz, but its a whopping 87 hz @ 1024x768 according to the specs viewsonic publishes

Glad you found the problem. Well, bout the refresh, i just mentioned that is strange, meaning it is not a tipical one, but it is not imposible, of course, so if the manufacturer says that that's the rate then you are ok to go with it. :D
