Are you emerging vanilla-sources or gentoo-sources?

gentoo-sources only go up to 2.6.11-r6

for a list of available kernels look here:

http://www.gentoo-portage.com/sys-kernel

ps. I moved this to the Kernel and Hardware forum.

yes, vanilla-sources, I can see the latest ebuild "vanilla-sources-2.6.12_rc2 and vanilla-sources-2.6.11.6" in /usr/portage/dev-kernel/vanilla-source, emerge -pv tells me I've got 2.6.12_rc2 (todays sync, portage update, ...)

OK. that version of the kernel is masked. I see you mention ~x86. Do you have that set in your /etc/make.conf or are you emerging like this:

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge vanilla-sources

Since your using vanilla you could always just download it direct from kernel.org and save it in /usr/src/ and it will work just fine. But you really should try to make it work with emerge.

Code:
# emerge -pv vanilla-sources

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.6.12_rc2  -build -doc -symlink 0 kB

No problem here.. but I have 'sys-kernel/vanilla-sources ~x86' in /etc/portage/package.keywords

yes, I've got ~x86 in /etc/make.conf and I did emerge vanilla-sources

today after I (re)synced portage tree, I tried again to emerge older =vanilla-sources-2.6.12_rc1, =vanilla-sources-2.6.12_rc2 and at the end vanilla-sources and always I got a properly named sources directories so the problem disappeared or did not exist at all (and/or was caused by my locally messed up setup, but anyway what I got on Friday as linux-2.6.11_rc2 is identical to what I got today as expected linux-2.6.12_rc2 )

thanks for all answers (I would replay sooner but we did a company ski weekend)
