I just made a major update on my laptop. I got about 69 conf-files and decided to do a -3 on etc-update.

Strange things started to happen, in gdm, the Shut down and Reboot options were gone, so I tried to do it manually buy typing halt, didnt work, reboot, didnt work either. So I hard shut it down.

Now, whenever I boot, everything works great until its time to mount the boot partion. I get a shellprompt instead. When I try to mount /dev/hda2, it doesnt exist, in fact, NO /dev/hda* exists. And the commands reboot and halt doesnt work either.

I've already looked at the fstab-conf, and that is not it. What could it be?

Thank you for your respons.

Reboot is probably just a symlink to halt, and halt probably doesn't work because the path environment variable is not set correctly. Try /sbin/halt instead. If that doesn't work, try /sbin/shutdown -h now to shut down, and /sbin/shutdown -r now to restart. As for the rest, I have no idea.

well i guess your /etc/fstab got overwritten, so maybe you wanna take a look in there. that the proc is mounted, and then all the other stuff like your /dev/hda s

Sounds serious and doesn't sound like a config problem. The forced reboot after your initial problem might have caused problems with your filesystem. Try booting from a livecd and give us the output of
Code:
fdisk -l /dev/hda

fstab:
Code:
/dev/hda2     /boot     ext2     defaults,noatime   1 2
/dev/hda4     /         reiserfs noatime            0 1
/dev/hda3     none      swap     sw                 0 0

none          /proc     proc     defaults           0 0
none          /dev/shm  tmpfs    defaults           0 0

I dont think thats the problem, but there you have it.

Fdisk doesnt work since there are no /dev/hda*

Oh, and proc in not mounted, and every disk that IS, is Read-only, so I cant continue my updates.

Edit: Fixed some typos in the code above.

Replace all "deafaults" in fstab with "defaults" and see if it helps.

Edit: Actually, since there are no /dev/hda*, it won't help. But you should probably fix it anyways.

then tell us that you see all the proper partitions.

Yeah, thats because I had to type the fstab since I cant cut'n'paste from my laptop. There were bound to be some errors when you type without looking :P I'll fix it right away.

I will do that, as soon as I have downloaded the cd, someone has borrowed mine and not returned it.
