strange characters in new programs

I've got a strange text problem that has just apeared. I've had a working system for months (75 days uptime and counting) running headless but with ssh, vnc + load of supporting daemons. I just emerged mplayer and quickrip and noticed that, not only does mplayer -h produce garbage (through both ssh & xterm in vnc), but that some non-kde GUI programs have garbage in their titles as well (one is running under mwm in a dedicated vnc server).

The system seems fine, no error messages. Looks like I might of got the use flags wrong for mplayer but that shouldn't affect the rest of the system surly!? I'm worried that this is going to build up into somthing big.
I recently updated to 2005 due to an emerge warning. What on earth could emerge of done to alter the text/unicode/font? Other programs that I usually use are fine

I've set the locale to UK with secondary languages for french and german. The man pages are ok, and I notice that it says it's added man pages for fr and de

P.S. Sorry if I'm chucking load of irrelivent data out, but I can't see where this problem could of come from.

OK looks like translation, looking into the source code of MPlayer. In the help folder there is a help_mp_uk.h which contains the garbage that I get out - Am I being stupid here is doesn't uk stand for united kingdom - which is why I've got it as my default language!?
If it does mean english - what strange character set am I missing?
Or if it doesn't - what does/ what does it stand for?

I have the same problem with LINGUAS="fr". the interface is in French without error on special caracters and error message are in magyar... I've tried without the LINGUAS param, and all seems ok now for the interface.

I've sort-of sorted the problem - mplayer anyway, I had LINGUAS="uk en_GB fr de" I took out the uk and rebuit mplayer now it works ok. But even after re-building openmotif I still get 'boxes' instead of characters (I use mwm for an always on vnc server which has just one program running).

I've got this nagging feeling that EVERYTHING I've compiled has to be recompiled with en_GB as primary language (at the very least gcc )

I put uk in there to make sure it didn't default to en (which is NOT uk english! although don't tell the americans )

I wonder if some untranslated programs go a bit loopy when they don't see "en" in the LINGUAS and produce "Special" characters? I'm probably wrong as I don't know much about the ebuild<->translation thing. Does anyone know what the state of gentoo's translation program is in - I haven't seen a huge amount of docs on my travels.
