Has anyone been successful in getting Gentoo (or linux in general) to boot and configure things successfully when APIC is enabled in the bios? I have a Via KT400 based MB and if I have apic enabled, all sorts of srewy errors show up about IRQ's assignments and some things (like onboard NIC) end up not working. Disable apic, and everything works fine.
Can someone with some better knowledge of APIC explain what the problem is? I thought you could enable ACPI in the linux kernel to allow for the use of motherboards that support bios enable APIC. |

You do realize that APIC is different than ACPI? APIC is related to multiple CPUs and ACPI is related to power management.

I do in an esoteric sort of way, although that was not the thrust of my question here. I meant to type "APIC"...
Since I believe I enable APIC and IO APIC in the 2.5.59 kernel, I figured that it would be able to take advantage of the faster interrupt handling even though it is not a multiprocessor system. This is a dual boot system and XP seems to like it (XP is only there for benchmarking purposes, otherwise I would never dirty my system so...) |
