Hey, Im looking for a bit of help here regarding setting up printing in gentoo. I need some advice as to which printing package to use and how to configure it. Ive done this before in Slackware a long time ago, but with different tools (a2ps, I believe). Any help would be appreciated.

Also, there is one other thing. Ive noticed my devfs doesn't have lp* devices. Is this a problem? Ive compiled in support for all printer drivers and support for lp in the kernel. Again, new to devfs in general.

From an ease of use standpoint, I'd go with the CUPS printing system. It has a great web interface that makes it really easy to add and configure printers. Detailed instructions on how to install it can be found in the Desktop Configuration Guide at www.gentoo.org/doc/desktop.html

I'm afraid I'm too much of a linux neophyte to be able to answer your devfs question. Good luck.

There's no lp* in devfs. It's called /dev/printers/* now. It should be there if you have compiled support for the parallell port and parallell *printer* support into the kernel. I first forgot the parallell printer support and just assumed it had something to do with devfs

I use pdq with my Lexmark E312. Works like a charm.
