|
|
Hi, I'm new to linux and got started by installing gentoo livecd for amd64, everything ran fine until I got up to the 'rebooting gentoo' part of the guide, after installing grub. I two options, Windows XP and Gentoo 2.6.11. Windows XP works fine, but if I try to boot gentoo I get the following error:
Code: | Booting 'Gentoo Linux 2.6.11'
root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type is reiserfs, partition type 0x83
kernel kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/sda4
Error 1: Filename must be either an absolute pathname or blocklist
Press any key to continue...
|
My grub.conf file is:
Code: | default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.11
root (hd0,1)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/sda4
title=Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1 |
Edit: Ok, I just realized my grub.conf, the line of kernel is really: "kernel kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/sda4"
And also, if I change it to what it shown above, I get Error 15: File not found(and I've already checked the /boot partition, which says that kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r6 is there.)
Edit2: Ok, I'm just stupid and copied the kernel over as 'kernal-2.6.11-gentoo-r6', copied it again as kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r6 and things working fine now.

You have your splashimage on (hd0,0) and your root on (hd0,1). This must be same.
I don't know for sure, so can you post your fstab _________________ "And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you." ~ Ezechiel 25:17 |

Ok, here's my fdisk -ls:
Code: | Disk /dev/sda: 82.3 GB, 82348277760 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 10011 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 7461 59930451 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 * 7462 7466 40162+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 7467 7716 2008125 83 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda4 7717 10011 18434587+ 83 Linux |
And my /etc/fstab:
Code: | /dev/sda2 /boot reiserfs defaults,noatime,notail 1 2
/dev/sda4 / reiserfs noatime 0 1
/dev/sda3 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 |
Edit: edited it so it looks nicer, and easier to read, and also, the (hd0,0) on the splashimage in my grub.conf I changed to (hd0,1) which didn't fix anything.

change splashimage to (hd0,1)
In grub <--> linux parlance:
hd0,0 == /dev/hda1
hd0,1 == /dev/hda2
hd0,2 == /dev/hda3
hd1,0 == /dev/hdb0
hd1,1 == /dev/hdb1
etc. |

Would it be possible that using a SATA drive would make grub use (hd1,X) or (hd2,X) etc? |

if there are ide drives in the system, yes.
if not, I don't think so
at the grub> prompt, you can type "root (hd" and press TAB a few times to see possibilities |
