Other than what I hear about GNOME 2.10+ and how Rendezvous is built into GnomeVFS for my wonderous ease, is there anyway I can get at some of that action at the mo?
I've got everything installed & i'm running an iTunes server even, but it would be nice to have the persistence of being able to
ssh me@otherbox
even if i'm running DHCP - (otherwise i'd have ssh me@some_ip_i_dont_want_to_lookup)
Is there a way to do this? I thought I saw a tutorial somewhere but I cant manage to find it.
All I really want is my hostnames back, I just switched my network over to DHCP and its frustrating having to revert to IP's. Being able to use just hostnames was wonderful. _________________ Don't drink & post. |

DnsMasq, which is a combo DNS and DHCP server, can give your DHCP computers hostnames. The best thing to do is make both a hosts file and an ethers file. Put each computer's MAC address(es) in the ethers file along with its hostname, and then list in hosts what IP's you want for each. Properly configured, DnsMasq will assign those computers the static IP's you picked, and if you use it as your DNS server, you can use those names and DnsMasq will return the IP addresses in response to a DNS query. |
