|
|
Hello,
I am wondering what I am doing wrong if I am doing something wrong.
Basically I am trying to get my sound blaster mp3+ working in linux (gentoo.) I have all the modules loading correctly. I can even use alsamixer on it, and even get 'some' sound out of it. The 'some' here is a keyword. If I play an mp3 for example, it will play part of it and then just stop playing, meaning the sound will stop but the player is still playing.
Ive tried installing alsa modules via the kernel, via emerge alsa-drivers. ive tried various versions of alsa-libs, alsa-drivers. But I still have the same problem no matter what I do.
Ive tried different players, mpg123 , xmms, alsaplayer etc. Still the same problem.
Ive also tried updating the players via emerge. Still the same thing.
So I thought it was because the laptop has a built in sound card as well, so I updated /etc/modules.d/alsa to get both sound card to initiate, the default sound card works fine.. both are regonized, still the same problem with the sound blaster.
Is this buggy usb-audio modules? Or is this human error? (I would think its human error)
Has anyone seen similar usb audio problems?
(Ive checked the board but haven't found anything useful (or I missed it)
Thanks for reading... and helping.. |

What I understood from the
alsa-project.org usb guide: I think you shouldn't use the usb-audio module, but let snd-usb-audio do its job. I'm interesting your sound card working, because I plan to buy one. I read a report of success with Knoppix 3.1 out of the box, so it *shouldn't* cause so much trouble.

Hum, my reply was not clear, as actually are my ideas. I think you could try to boot from Knoppix and see what sort of modules are loaded. You can also try following the alsa guide of the alsa project, if you didn't do it.

Greetings,
I'm considering purchasing this to use with my MythTV system. Did you have any luck getting it running properly? _________________ "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. YES, it works (at least with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.5-gentoo-r1):
1. Compile (make && make modules_install and copy bzImage to the boot partition) all the "drivers -> sound" part of the kernel as modules, including the following: snd, soundcore, snd_usb_audio, snd_raw_midi, snd_seq_device, snd_pcm, snd_page_alloc, snd_timer. DON'T COMPILE usb audio support in "drivers->usb" (module called audio, not needed).
2. Write something like that in your /etc/modules.d/alsa:
Code: |
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio
alias snd-card-1 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
|
(I have two cards on my laptop, but the integrated card intel8x0 is dead)
3. Check that you have alsasound in the bootlevel default ; reboot in your new kernel.
Honestly, I'm really happy that it works. Since my soundcard died two months ago, I was like desperatly hanging at the (german) radio and not very pleased with anything else than news.
Enjoy,
Sébastien. |

@ swingarm, servo888
Yes the digital output (optical) works fine. If you can get the sound card working the optical output will too. The problem should be getting the card to work not the digital output.
