|
|
Hey, I was wondering if it's possible to do a remote install of gentoo through ssh (or possibly other means) from my main gentoo box to this other old box that I'll use as an experimental server.
Right now, I have to ferry the mouse/keyboard/monitor plugs back and forth, and in my laziness (and interest in learning something), I'd like to be able to install gentoo remotely. I used to have it where I could ssh from either box to the other, but I wiped the old one to do a fresh install (just stage3--don't want the hassle for the old box) and I'm not sure if/when I could set up sshd on it without interfering with the installation process.

When you have your shell on the LiveCD, just /etc/init.d/sshd start && passwd and then you will be able to acces the box for installation. I think it's explained in the Gentoo Handbook |

Pretty easy.
See this page for alternative Install methods.
I used the Knoppix method to do an Gentoo install on my Desktop Workhorse so I could still have a graphical envirnoment to play / surf around in. _________________

its amazing what kind of information is available in the manual, if people would only read it.
SSH is covered in the first sentence of the networking section of the Gentoo Installation Handbook.

And luckily screen is on the livecd. I know we can't cruft up the handbook with everything somebody might need to know but I've always thought a mention of screen would be helpful.

Debian's is pretty good (there's a running Debian system sitting on the other 5 virtual consoles from the installer program; ctl + alt + F2 and set up your remote install). RedHat/Fedora and SuSE don't have remote install capability so much as unattended install capability, which can be very nice in some circumstances... _________________ vi? *snicker* it doesn't even include a mail reader... |
