First of all i am a newcomer to Gentoo. But i am a Linux user.so i knew lots of things as i need.
Here is my problem.
I download the two CD which is universal and packages 2005.0 cds. I installed the base system as told in the manual. But when i tried to jupm to X with startx command it says to me
"xterm" couldnt found. I realize that it didnt install xterm. When i try it with
it does not look xterm in cd but for internet. And since i dont have any connection it fails.
Then ,i tried to install other packages from the packages cd. i.e KDE or xmms or mpeg123, for these packages sama event has happened. Before that i adjust the packagedir with
Code: | export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom" | since there is not a directory with name packages. Now i know those packages in the /usr/portage/... directory but the system can not install them. I tried lots of parameter -k, --usepkg even i tried ebuild. I wonder where is the problem.
By the way same i encounterd with the same error when i tried to install GRUB and i installed lilo instead of GRUB.
Now i need help.. |

If you only finished the base system, you don't have Xorg. It's only a small Linux that can boot and run. But there are no usefull apps installed.
So if you want Xorg, emerge it. Documentation: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

Again: The CD's only contain the packages you need to get a bootable Gentoo. To go further you need an internet connection to obtain additional packages. A Gentoo Linux without the ability to get an internet connection makes no sense. You want to update your system with newer packages, so you need to download them. _________________ Heaven: The police are British, the chefs Italian, the mechanics German, the lovers French and it's organized by the Swiss.
