| For some reason it no longer works for me to run X programs on a `su -` session opened from a terminal emulator under X. Every time I get "can't connect to X server" errors or similar. I suspect something has broken somewhere. Does anyone know where to start investigating on the problem, or had something similar? |

| Yes, I had the same problem before. All I did was reboot and first log into "su -" then startx. |

| Log into `su -` ? You mean logging as root or logging as regular user then running `su -` ? |
