Yesterday the onboard network on my Nforce4 mother board stopped working for some reason. The forcedeth module loads correctly like it always has, but in the dmesg printout, it indicates that the link was not initialized, and then about once every five seconds, there are
Code:
Link Up
Link Down
messages. My first instinct was that the network cable was toast, so I tried hooking the machine up to the router with a cable that I knew was working (had been hooked up to another machine, but still not connection was being made. As I have a winders install on this machine (the no-cost xp-64 rc) I tried rebooting to it and it too displayed similar behavior in that the "Network Cable Unplugged" annoyance system tray message popped up repeatedly, about every five seconds. That lead me to believe that for some reason, the network chip is no longer able to negotiate a link to the router. As this happened under both Gentoo and WinXP, I'm lead to think this is a hardware problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how to diagnose this better?

Sorry man, it does sound like its dead. Normally windows XP can initiallize about any NIC, one thing I like about windows so if it hasn't come up in gentoo or windows chances are its broke :(. You can try Knoppix. But if nothing is bringing it up, I think using a network tester is in vane, mostly because if you can't initialize it how are you going to test it? Do you have a warrenty on the board? If so I suggest sending it back for a replacement or a full refund.

A complete powerdown of the system, removing the powercord, and unplugging the network cable reset the net device properly, and after hooking everything up again and booting again, all is well.
