| I can't stand Gnome anymore. I've been using it since 2.4 and now it reached the 2.10 version and it still sucks. Nautilus is still very buggy plus it lacks a lot of basic tools that KDE already has. I'm planning to move to KDE but there is a problem. So far my Gentoo has been GTK/GNOME only (USE="+gtk +gtk2 +gnome -kde -qt -arts ..."). If I want to migrate to KDE 3.4 I will need to recompile some packages to include QT/KDE support right ? How can I find all the installed packages that lack QT/KDE/ARTS support ? If I manage to switch to KDE 3.4 I also want to remove GNOME and GTK support from my packages. How can I do all this ? |

to use qt and kde stuff just change the make.conf flags and then:

to recompile packages affect by the flags |

You'll probably still want to keep gtk. Key word.. "probably"... as many apps use it and you might not find a compatible qt app. Example: i can't find a half way decent ftp app other than gftp. Firefox also requires gtk.
I'm not saying that there aren't equivilents... Just food for thought. |

Having flipped from KDE to Gnome and back again a few times now, I can say that this is a doable task. emerge -Duv --newuse world should take care of all of your USE flag changes. Just be sure to do it before you go to sleep so your machine can work on it overnight.

I'll just plug in here as well that if you have a sound card with hardware mixing (and even my integrated 2-channel Realtek crap has it, which surprised me), you may want to keep -arts in there.

Why do you need an ftp app when you can do everything with konqueror using ftp:// and the network section in the location toolbar? You can have a remote folder behaving exactly like a local folder... |

i'm a kde lover, love the possibilty to use ftp://, lan://, smb:// in konqui, but if you have to use passive ftp with konqui, it's sucks, at least for me (and i have set up passive mode in konqui config), in every kde 3.x (except 3.4, don't have it yet), so i still use gftp, works much better in that aspect |

OK, I fixed the minor issues but I have some questions.
Why isn't there any 'Computer' icon on my desktop ?
Can you access www.kde-look.org ? I get the page not found screen in Firefox.
Illissius: I put the arts USE flag and I'm using arts as a sound output for Gaim and it works perfect. The sound's qulitiy is even better that with esound. |

yes, but gstreamer can be used by some kdeapps, too - and it'll be supported in the next BIG KDE version (4.0). in 3.5 I think support will be in even more apps than today.
as for gftp - kbear anyone? |

i tried kbear, but didn't likeit much, so, stick to gftp |

You can also try KFTPGrabber and Kasablanca (although this one is not supported anymore, IIRC).

Gconf. yes, that is userfriendly. at least, the gnome way.
When you want something in KDE - Remember ONE thing: right mouse button. always. anywhere. It'll bring up the context menu, with the config options. want a trash on the kicker? right mouse button (rmb): add -> applet -> kicker trash. and for the onther things - try the other applets, and the special buttons.
