i didn't really know where to post this thread, so i decided to post it here. i have a problem with xchat, lopster and the terminal: they do not allow me to key in the stressed vowels, i.e. "à" "è" "ì" "ò" "é" "ù". why is this a problem? because, being italian, i do really need them to write correctly and, sometimes, even just to make myself understood. i think that the three programmes use the same keymapping or something like that. what happens is that on keystroke of any of those vowels, nothing appears. if i try to press, let's say, "à", nothing will appear neither in a terminal, nor in lopster chat, nor in in the xchat window. since the problem is the same in each of the three programmes i thought that they use the same keymapping. now, some information that could be useful for you in order to help me. in /etc/rc.conf i have
KEYMAP="it" that should be correct
then
#CONSOLEFONT="alt-8x8"
the latter is commented because i've seen that this way i CAN see the stressed vowels in CONSOLE. don't know why, probably the default configuration is the best
#CONSOLETRANSLATION="8859-1_to_uni"
commented because i did't know what it was.
that's it. i hope someone will help me getting rid of this annoying problem.
thank you

Have you got the XkbModel and XkbLayout options set correctly in /etc/X11/XF86Config ? |

thank you for your reply.
i hope so
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc102"
Option "XkbLayout" "it"
i even counted the keys and they're 102, excluding the special/microsoft ones (the 2 act as a click on the start button and the one used to open the window menu). are there other tests i could do?
thanks

I'm not guaranteeing this will work, but try putting the lines below in your /etc/profile and then reboot.
Code: |
export LANG=en_US
export LC_CTYPE=it_IT

they LC_CTYPE envirnoment variable describes your locale, it_IT referring to italian. This lets all your programs know which characters to interpret your keystrokes as. _________________ aaarggghhhh.
