When i ran xf86config and went through the entire process
then startx
the server crashed and said no screens found
so i ran
X -configure
and it came up with an error. Saying the card is valid but there is no info in the xf86Pci.h (that file name might not be correct but it was similar to that)
also i tried to install the new nvidia drivers but when i modprobe NVdriver
i get an error. Might be related might not be.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks |

can you try emerging the latest nvidia drivers and then 'modprobe nvidia'
(the driver name changed)
and
less /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx-1.0.4191/README.gz
will might help you too... |

I had the exact same error a while back..
I never did solve it, but i did get around it. I just took a sample XF86Config-4 file from the net and edited to match my configuration.
X started up fine after that.

AHH, but check your XF86Config. Are you using the "nvidia" driver? Try running "glxgears" Depending on your motherboard and a few other things, the frame rate should be > 2400 f/sec. Issue the comand from an X console and let it run for 30 seconds and it will output a framerate every 5 secs. _________________ Regards, Ernie

You're missing the point. X -configure wouldn't generate a XF86Config at all. I'm guessing that it's either a bug in the XFree86 code, or the Geforce 4 Ti4200 really isn't supported yet (which seems unlikely).

XFree86 -configure hasn't worked for me on 3 different distros using the same card (GeForce4 TI4200) I'm not sure why and Xfree86 .org mailing lists weren't much help either. What I've done is to emerge the nvidia-glx and nvidia kernel and use XF86Config to get a semi working config and edit it manually. I can email you my working config if you like.
I didn't really miss the point, you see, but forgive me for not adressing it. I've been through it so much, it's not really a consideration for me anymore
What I think the point is, in fact, getting a working X configuration. I'm just trying to help _________________ Regards, Ernie
