Does anybody have an idea how to install/work the Amanda backup system work in Gentoo??

well - you could just get a src.rpm of amanda-2.4.3 - rebuild it on your Gentoo (with --no-deps - as it will complain about missing devel-packages and stuff ;) - and then install that RPM - or alternatively, build an ebuild for it :)
