Hey
Im not sure whether this is the right place to report what seems to be a typo error in the Handbook
The section 6 of chapter 1 says:
Quote: | As you can see, in the above example there is a 2.4 subdirectory. This means that the current profile uses the 2.6 kernel; |
That sounds weird. I think the author wanted to say:
Quote: | As you can see, in the above example there is a 2.4 subdirectory. This means that the current profile uses the 2.4 kernel; |
But then they say:
Quote: | if you want a 2.4-based system, you need to relink your make.profile symlink: |
Which then should become:
Quote: | if you want a 2.6-based system, you need to relink your make.profile symlink: |
which would be more logical
I'm installing Gentoo from the 2005.0 minimal LiveCD and I don't find any 2.6/ directory in /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/ in order to have a 2.6-based system
So is it me or the handbook is wrong and something is missing in my portage profiles?
And since I'm posting here, i've got another question: does the current version of GCC support the -march=pentium-m for mobile pentiums (ie, Centrino / Dothans) ? [since I'm installing Gentoo on my laptop]
What do I have to do in addition of the regular installation stuffs in order to add power saving? (SpeedStep and such)
Thank you _________________ I am not sending subliminal messages |

The handbook is correct. If you see a directory in ls -l /etc/make.profile, then you are currently running the opposite kernel (2.4 <-> 2.6), AFAIK. If you want 2.6, don't symlink anything.
I don't know about the Dothan thing. I've heard they're fast, but other than that, I'm no help. |

The default is to use the 2.6 kernel; 2.4 was placed in a subdirectory of the 2005.0 profile to allow people to use it more easily. However, the handbook could use a sentance like "If you want to use 2.6 don't change anything".
