I noticed that surfing websites is extremely slow with gentoo (in comparision to windows). Since my downloads go at 4-5k per second it is a bit confusing, but surfing websites with a lot of images can be painful in comparison to the way websites load with relative ease in windows. My first guess is compression, but I really don't know much about it. Does anyone out there know why this is happening and / or how to *fix* or change it so that websites load faster? I really appreciate it.

it has been a long time since dial up for me. There is an option to use compression under the ppp part of the kernel config. maybe this would help?
CONFIG_PPP_DEFLATE
CONFIG_PPP_BSDCOMP
you will need to insert these modules too to get them to work. this can be done in /etc/modules.d/ppp or something if you want it to happen automagically. |

If you are getting transfer rates at about 5~8kbs then congrats at obtaining your fastest speed. It may be that strict downloads are slow, but web browsing like in other OSs is ok. It may be a mental thing. Just fetch some sources and see your transfer rates. |

you could also think about a caching dns, a http proxy and a banner blocker.
that helps the surfing experience. |

Interesting,
I have all the compression on in the kernel (built-in). Since they are not modules I don't load them seperately.
Websites load so slowly that they time out half of the time, this certainly never happened before.
I'll also look into what you said, anxt. Banners are the past. I rarely see banners on websites with adblock for firefox
If anyone else can point me to more clues on why this is happening, i'd really appreciate it.

Alright, I have found the problem and i'll post here in case anyone else has a similar problem.
The problem was completely hardware related. Whenever I moved the mouse (PS/2) my internet connection would slow down to zero bps. I put in my funky M$ usb mouse and my internet works but now I'll have to deal with not having a functioning scrollwheel.
Thanks for everyone's help. |
