Hi,

everytime i try to compile a kernel (genkernel or manual, no difference), i get this error message:

Quote:

*** End of Linux kernel configuration.
*** Execute 'make' to build the kernel or try 'make help'.

* >> Installing gensplash [ using the emergence theme ]...
gunzip: /usr/src/linux/usr/initramfs_data.cpio already exists; do you wish to overwrite (y or n)? y
* >> Compiling 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 bzImage...
* ERROR: Failed to compile the "bzImage" target...

* -- Grepping log... --

Root device is (3, 67)
Boot sector 512 bytes.
Setup is 5182 bytes.
System is 6525 kB
System is too big. Try using modules.
make[1]: *** [arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage] Error 1
make: *** [bzImage] Error 2
* Gentoo Linux Genkernel; Version 3.1.5

* ERROR: Failed to compile the "bzImage" target...

* -- End log... --

Seems to be easy, but i built already an hardly small "mini-kernel" with as much modules as possible, but this error message still remains the same.

Strange thing which happend from one day to another .. what am I doing wrong?

I don't know what your error means, but maybe you could
Code:
make mrproper

to restore the kernel tree to a fully clean state and try again. Be sure to backup your .config file though, as it will get removed to.

Hey, I am having the exact same problem on AMD64..

bzImage is to big! I tried scaling it down by just building in what needed to be using --menuconfig but no go...

Quote:
Boot sector 512 bytes
Setup is 5424 bytes.
System is 6962 kb

Well, there is an issue here... I'll try building it by hand and see if the problem is in genkernel..

With manual compile it doesn't work, either :(

Seems to be a big issue ... mrproper doesn't work, too :(

Ok,

I got it running, my friend had a basic install CD dated 04/14 I booted with it and the kernel built fine....

I checked my iso image md5 sum and all was well, so I mounted the disk on my other system and (after a bit of figuring out how) I got an md5 and all was well....

The disk in question is a universal install disk that I got from OSDL. I would file a bug report but I am not sure what is wrong quite yet. I will do a little more research and then see what I come up with.

For the meanwhile I recommend downloading and using the basic install disk to build your kernel with... cheers :)

I recieved this exact error when compiling a kernel with genkernel on an AMD64. I narrowed it down to a splashutils error, but have no fix for it.
