|

Okay, it seems as though X.org randomly locks up when doing certasin things.
If I am using gnome-terminal WITH transparency, X.org will lock up in the same flavor as the Firefox one. The mouse will still be able to move but nothing responds to any click or keyboard input.
If I am using Opera, it sometimes locks up X.org when I scroll while the system is under load.
If anyone else has had these problems, please let me know if there are any workarounds. |

My knee-jerk responses to X lockups/crashes:
0: after the next lockup, try to ssh in from another machine and check logfiles for clues
1: turn off experimental x.org features (composite, nvidia renderaccel, etc)
2: If you're using a nitro, love, dark or some other super-experimental kernel, switch to vanilla-sources
3: check your cflags (-ffast-math = bad)
4: check your memory with memtest86
5: check that your CPU, Video card, and chipset heatsinks are secure, not full of dust, and the fans are working |

I don't have another computer to do it from
1: turn off experimental x.org features (composite, nvidia renderaccel, etc)
I'll try without nvidiarenderaccel, but it used to do it even before I got it working
2: If you're using a nitro, love, dark or some other super-experimental kernel, switch to vanilla-sources
gentoo-sources here
3: check your cflags (-ffast-math = bad)
CFLAGS="-march=athlon -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -falign-functions=4 -finline-limit=1000"
4: check your memory with memtest86
I just recently did a memtest and it came up clear
5: check that your CPU, Video card, and chipset heatsinks are secure, not full of dust, and the fans are working
This could be the culperate because my CPU always runs hot (I need a better cooling system) but it only becomes unstable at 71deg and it's usually at around 66deg |
