cascamorto,

You need usb-storage, the SCSI subsystem, including SCSI CD ROM support and SCSI Generic support. The device will appear as a SCSI device. I like X-CD-Roast for burning.

Get reading to work before you try writing.

usb-storage do you mean libusb? and those scsi options are the scsi options in the kernel right?

cascamorto,

They are all kernel options.

X-CD-ROAST didn't find it during the scan... i think it's just a case of mounting the drive if someone could tell me how...

cascamorto,

You need SCSI CD-rom support, SCSI Generic, and usb-stroage in your kernel. iso9660 and udf filesystem support is essential too.
The drive will appear as /dev/sda or /dev/sr0 unless you have other SCSI or SCSI like devices.
Put a data CD in the drive and attempt to mount it with
Code:
mount /dev/sd<?> /mnt/point -t iso9660
Try /dev/sr0 too.
Your CD is UDB 2.0 but your PC is only running USB 1.1. Thats OK but USB 1.1 is very slow for CD writing.
Is your PC USB 2.0 capable ?

If you are sure your kernel is OK and it still fails, please post the output of lspci and the file /usr/src/linux/.config

cascamorto,

Code:
CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG=y
is a bad idea. It will slow everything down further than it already is.
Your kernel looks fine other than that. Its all built in, so there is nothing to modprobe either.
Plug your CDROM in and run
Code:
dmesg
that should show what its detected as.
Put a data CD in the drive and try to mount it using the information from dmesg.
Post the tail end of dmesg here if you dont understand it.

cascamorto,

That means that your CD drive and usb-storage don't get along. Can you post the content of /proc/bus/usb/devices please. You may need a small kernel patch, if its already known.
Don't rebuild your kernel meanwhile, there is another change in the offing.

cascamorto,

That /proc/bus/usb/devices shows two root hubs and a Creative lite mouse.
If your CD rom was plugged in it didn't get detected - so its game over, its a USB 2.0 device not falling back to USB 1.0 like its supposed to. If the CD was not connected, can you do it again please?

I'm after the Vendor and Product IDs so I can see if there is a patch for unusual_devices.h

i removed the usb debugging thing and recompiled my kernel and my dmesg has changed (sry, hadn't read your post):
Code:

usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 3
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0

thats the end bit the bit before is about my tv capture card... but it still doesn't mount using the above mount command u gave me...

cascamorto,

It was worth trying. Debug slows things right down. It can even cause timeouts.
Code:
usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
shows its still sulking.

There is no unusual-devs.h entry for it just now. I have got that far.
More news later.

thats the output it gives while it's reading the cd cuz if i wait for it to stop reading is as if the drive weren't there... anyway i searched on google for the cypress chipset and it seems to be mentioned in a lot of forums..

I've put the modules under usb-storage (appart from the experimentals) and this is my dmesg:
Code:

devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for vcc/3
devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for vcc/a3
devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for vcc/6
devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for vcc/a6
devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for vcc/a8
devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for vcc/9
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 3
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 1 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete

I will now try with the experimentals aswell... the device takes longer to "settle" now for somereason though it kind of reads the cd this time not just starts and then stops straight away..

i've put all the usb-storage modules... these are the dmesgs i get in 3 variuos stages.

just as i start the drive:
Code:

usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 3
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

while the drive readds the data cd in it
Code:

usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 3
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4

the drive has finished reading
Code:

usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 3
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 1 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
