I'm puzzled that I cannot su on my new gentoo install. I can log in as root either locally or remotely via ssh, but if logged on as an ordinary user I cannot su (or su -). I always get
Code:
 $ su
Password:
su: Permission denied
Sorry.

I've never had to set up su on any other linux. Is this a result of some gentoo thing, or perhaps a compilation problem from the install process. If the latter, how do I re-compile the relevant part (presumably bash ??)

TIA

You'll want to make sure you're a member of the wheel group in order to be able to use su.

As for "Is gentoo su different?" No, I believe the BSDs implement the same scheme, that you must be a member of the wheel group to su root. Someone can correct me if I am wrong of course.

Ho! I never came across that before. I have seen group wheel on other systems, but if RH or SuZe use that, they must add the users in automatically, as I never did it myself. And debian doesn't even set a group wheel. I wonder where that is configured. Can't see it in /etc. Perhaps it's compiled in.

Anyway, thanks. Problem solved
